Jailbirds on war path

Dhankuta, May 12

Inmates have been agitating saying security guard Devraj Adhikari had been exploiting them in Dhankuta District Prison. Issuing a press statement today, 45 prisoners accused Adhikari of embezzling money meant for them.

The statement reads that Adhikari was procuring daily essentials and inflating the bills to double the actual market price. They have demanded Adhikari’s immediate transfer.

Dilli Prasad Adhikari is the authorised security guard. However, Devraj managed to get the posting at the jail in nexus with the police administration. Jailbirds have accused Adhikari of selling tobacco-related items and liquor at exorbitant price to inmates inside the jail. They complained they had not been receiving the facilities they were supposed to get from the security guard for the past seven months.

Meanwhile, Adhikari said inmates were agitated after he started a campaign to improve the condition in the jail. “Inmates started to protest as I tightened the flow of tobacco-related items and liquor inside the jail,” Adhikari stated.

He said he had managed telephone service to enable jailbirds to talk to family members. He said he was ready to face any punishment if he was found guilty of irregularities. “Dilli Prasad Adhikari is the authorised security guard and I started working as a guard in consensus with jailbirds three years ago,” Adhikari sated.
