Did you know that in 1930, the city of Sunnyvale sold a 1,000-acre parcel of farmland bordering San Francisco Bay for $1 to the U.S. government as a home base for the Navy airship USS Macon? The Saratoga Historical Foundation is hosting “The History of Moffett Field—From Lighter Than Air to Faster Than Sound” on May 28 at the Saratoga Foothill Club, 20399 Park Place, at 7:30 p.m. http://www.saratogahistory.com.
It is amazing what talent is all around us. I visited NUMU (New Museums of Los Gatos) and Atelier director Gabriel, who teaches classical drawing and painting classes for adults and teens, and their work is truly amazing. See for yourself May 17 at the opening of “On the Shoulders of Giants: Selected Works from the NUMU Atelier Masters and Students.” Coke founded the Atelier in 2015, providing an opportunity for artistic training that is not offered in the classroom. An opening reception will be held on May 17, 6-8 p.m. www.Numulosgatos.org/atelier.

Food services are being kicked up a notch at Saratoga’s Mountain Winery thanks to a partnership with Global Gourmet Catering, the newly appointed exclusive caterer for all events. A sample of what’s new: Specialty dining including a three-course fixed price menu at the Mountain Winery Restaurant. Guests can purchase dinners and tickets to The Mountain Winery’s 61st Summer Concert Series at AXS.com when the full season lineup of shows is announced next month.
Quite an accomplishment: Saratogan Carol Woodard earned the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. The contractor-centric association rarely gives such an award to an interior designer; they clearly recognize that she is something very special. Carol’s slogan is, “Transforming ordinary houses into extraordinary homes,” so the bottom line is that Carol is extraordinary. Congratulations! www.woodardandassociates.com.
The Saratoga Community Band is presenting “A Summertime Musical Escape” featuring music by Vaughan Williams, Holmes, Rodgers, Gershwin, Bernstein, Sousa and many others, May 19, 4 p.m. at Wildwood Park on Fourth Street in the Saratoga Village. Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. A huge thank you to the Foothill Club for continuing one of Saratoga oldest traditions, the annual Memorial Day Ceremony. Beginning at 9:30am May 27 at Blaney Plaza, the group proceeds to Madronia Cemetery. This wonderful observance gathers young and old, families, church and civic groups and, of course, veterans and current members of the U.S. Armed Forces. All are welcome.
Campbell celebrates Memorial Day at Campbell Veteran’s Memorial at Orchard City Green, between the library and city hall, May 27, 9-10 a.m. 408-370-2200.
