Racing Report Card: A horse for the tracker, gambles gone astray and a star performer in the making on Friday

CHESTER CUP day was a washout in terms of the weather, but there were some notable performances on the track.

There was also some decent stuff at Ascot and we’ve picked out some of the key moments that may have escaped your notice.

One for the tracker

Baraweez – 1.50 Chester

The Brian Ellison-trained gelding has slipped down the weights and hinted at a return to form here.

The battle-hardened nine-year-old was given plenty to do towards the tail of the field by young Ben Robinson.

He kept on nicely into third and was never nearer than at the death. He is weighted to strike and should be kept on side next time out.

Star performance

Final Song – 2.00 Ascot

This Godolphin-owned filly looks to have a very bright future indeed.

She showed blistering speed here under Oisin Murphy, galloping right away from some nicely-bred rivals.

She is now among the favourites for the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, and you wouldn’t bet against her running a huge race there.

Burnt fingers

Ptarmigan Ridge & Austrian School

Punters had a mare at a rain-soaked Chester on Friday.

In the first, Ptarmigan Ridge (5-1 into 15-8) was backed as if defeat was out of the question, but he threw in the towel at the top of the straight and finished well-held.

In the big one itself, Austrian School (9-2 into 3-1) was smashed up, but after missing the break he could never get involved.

It’s been a cracking few days for the bookies on the Roodee.
