Former Alabama Senate candidate and accused child molester Judge Roy Moore (R) is considering another run for office and believes Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s ability to “survive” sexual assault allegations is proof he could win, according to a recent fundraising email.
“In 2017, Republicans and Democrats alike conspired to defeat Judge Moore in the U.S. Senate special election. Groups spent upwards of $50 million dollars to spread falsehoods and deceit among Alabama voters,” reads the email signed by Moore’s wife Kayla.
It continues, “It was no strange coincidence that only 10 months later these same false and scurrilous tactics would again be used in the midst of a very important Supreme Court nomination process of Brett Kavanaugh in 2018. Judge Kavanaugh would survive to be appointed to that high court.”
During the 2017 special election in Alabama, nine different women came forward alleging Moore had sexually abused them. One woman was just 14 when Moore, who was in his 30s at the time, allegedly molested her.
Homophobic and Islamophobic comments from Moore’s past also came back to haunt him, including his beliefs that Muslims shouldn’t be allowed to serve in Congress and that homosexuality should be criminalized.
During the race, ThinkProgress reported that Moore co-authored a study course asserting that women should not be permitted to run for elective office.
If women do run for office, the course maintains, people have a moral obligation not to vote for them. The course is also critical of the women’s suffrage movement, which in 1920 secured some American women the right to vote.
“While very few politicians could survive such vicious attacks, Judge Moore is not only fighting back in court against those who conspired to destroy his political career, but is also seriously considering another run for the United States Senate!” Moore’s fundraising email says.
Apparently referring to a lawsuit from Leigh Corfman, one of the women who has accused Moore of abuse, the email says, “Lawyers and Washington D.C.’s powerful political forces who are using the court system to delay justice and inhibit his future plans for public office WILL NOT STOP!”
Two other Republicans — Rep. Bradley Byrne (AL.) and former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville — have already announced they are running for the Senate seat, as The Washington Post noted Wednesday.
In 2014, Republicans won the Alabama Senate seat Sen. Doug Jones (D) now holds with 97 percent of the vote. In 2017, Jones won the seat with 49.9% of the vote.
