‘Avengers’ screening among measles exposure sites in Orange County

A Placentia woman in her 20s who went to see “Avengers: Endgame” during the opening weekend is the first confirmed case of measles in Orange County in 2019, health officials announced Tuesday, April 30.

The Orange County Health Care agency advised people of potential exposure locations, including the AMC Theater on Lemon Street in Fullerton, between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. April 25, at a showing of “Avengers.”

However, spokeswoman Jessica Good said “the exposure risk applies to anyone who was at the theater during that time period.”

Other exposure sites include St. Jude Emergency Department in Fullerton, between 7 and 9 a.m. April 27 and 5 Hutton Centre Drive in Santa Ana, between 7 a.m. and 7:15 p.m. each day April 23 to 25.

According to health officials, the Placentia resident recently traveled overseas and is considered infectious through Wednesday, May 1. She is under voluntary isolation at home, health officials said.

The Health Care Agency said it has been attempting to reach people who may have been exposed, particularly those at high risk including infants, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.

Health officials are asking those who think they may have been exposed to review their vaccination history, especially if they haven’t had measles.

Initial symptoms of measles include high fever, runny nose, cough and inflamed eyes. Those who suspect exposure are asked to monitor themselves for illness with fever and an unexplained rash from seven to 21 days after the exposure.
