NORTHERN parts of Britain are expected to be hit by snow and freezing temperatures over the May Bank Holiday.
Arctic air is due to hit the UK on Friday which will see temperatures top around 12C at best with most areas somewhere between 8-12C.
The Arctic blast is expected to bring with it some wintry showers and snow falling in the Highlands and Pennines as possibly Snowdonia too.
But many parts of the UK are expected to see fine and dry weather for most of the bank holiday weekend, according to Helen Roberts, a meteorologist at The Met Office.
But Ms Roberts warned that the north and east could see some windy conditions and eastern areas could also see some hail.
The bank holiday Monday could see a small rise in temperatures to around 15-16C in most parts but still just below average for this time of year.
Sara Thornton, director of digital weather company Weathertrending, told The Sun Online: “Snow is likely to quite low levels across the north and east of Scotland as the weekend begins, and a wintry mix of rain, hail and sleet may turn up more widely in the heavier showers that swoop across the north and east of the UK on a northerly wind into Saturday morning.

“Settling snow is only likely to be seen on the Highlands, Grampians and, perhaps briefly, the Cheviots, Pennines and North York Moors.
“Saturday will be the coldest day of the Holiday Weekend, with a raw wind across eastern counties. Temperatures in some places will fail to reach double figures, falling much closer to freezing in any heavier showers.
“Later on through the weekend the direct supply of Arctic air will slowly be cut off. With a lot of sunshine and lighter winds, especially further west across the UK, it will actually feel quite pleasant by day, especially by Bank Holiday Monday.
“However, as the skies clear overnight, frosts will become quite widespread this weekend. With lows of -3C or even lower in some rural spots, farmers and gardeners are at risk of a damaging frost, given how late in the season we now are.”
Brian Gaze, director and forecaster for The Weather Outlook, told The Sun Online: “Frost is likely to return widely on Saturday night.
“On Sunday scattered showers are probable and although it remains chilly daytime temperatures should be a little higher.
“It’s a similar picture on Monday, although perhaps a little warmer in the south and west.
