Instagram’s new feature will turn us all into Instashoppers

Instagram will now let you buy items directly from the creators you follow.

Users will be able to click on a tagged item of clothing, video game, toothbrush or any other product and buy it directly through the app.

‘People come to Instagram to be with their close friends, but they also branch out to explore the things they care about, such as art, fashion, music and entertainment – and the people behind those crafts,’ the company said in a press release.

‘Creators are a cornerstone of the interest community on Instagram and people love getting that spark of inspiration when they learn about a new skin care routine or see their favourite musician in that perfect denim jacket. And, unlike seeing the jacket on a rack, when they see it on someone they look up to – or someone who looks like them – suddenly it’s relatable and even attainable.’

The social network says it will begin testing the feature with a few select influencers – including Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian and Leesa Angelique.

At present, it appears the feature is only going to be available to US users but may roll out to the UK in due course.

The app already lets US browsers buy from a range of different businesses.

Only a selected list of fashion and make-up brands, including H&M, Nike, Prada, Zara and Burberry, are currently available. However, you can be pretty certain this option will also arrive in the UK before too long.

Users will be able to tap a ‘Checkout on Instagram’ button when they see a product that takes their interest, which directs them to a page within Instagram where they can select sizes and colours, before entering payment and delivery information. The app will provide notifications with shipment updates, as well as the ability to track the delivery process.
