You could earn money while you drive by letting your motor automatically report heavy traffic and potholes

YOU could soon get paid while you drive by letting your car report potholes and heavy traffic.

And the system will automatically pay for tolls, parking and electric charging.

New technology currently being developed by Jaguar Land Rover will allow drivers to earn IOTA cryptocurrency as they drive – a type of digital currency used instead of cash.

Using the system – Smart Wallet – drivers will be able to collect credits by allowing their car to report dangerous potholes and heavy traffic.

Owners will then be able to use the cryptocurrency when paying for road tolls, parking fees and charging electric vehicles.

You’ll could even be able to pay for a coffee at your local cafe using the technology.

According a promotional video by the company, sensors in the car will store this information and share it with local councils and navigation providers.

This information will be used to re-route drivers to less congested routes, helping to reduce emissions from cars stuck in traffic.

Connected tech installed in the vehicle will then detect when it’s approaching a toll and automatically pay the fee.

The IOTA token allows people and machines to transfer money and data without any transaction fees.

It is currently being trialled in the Jaguar F-PACE and Range Rover Velar at the automaker’s engineering centre in Shannon, Ireland.

Russell Vickers, software architect at Jaguar Land Rover, said: “The connected car technologies we are developing will be transformative and truly turn your Jaguar or Land Rover into a third space, in addition to your home or office.

“In the future an autonomous car could drive itself to a charging station, recharge and pay, while its owner could choose to participate in the sharing economy – earning rewards from sharing useful data such as warning other cars of traffic jams.”

Holger Köther, director of partnerships at the IOTA Foundation, said: “Our distributed ledger technology is perfectly suited to enable machine-to-machine payments for smart charging, parking and tolls, in addition to creating opportunities for drivers to earn their own digital currency.”
