LEGENDARY filmmaker John Singleton was the first African American director be nominated for an Oscar.
In April 2019, he fell into a coma after suffering a stroke.
Who is John Singleton?
Singleton, from Los Angeles, California, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for his 199 1 debut film Boyz in the Hood.
He was the first African American and youngest person to have ever been nominated for the award at age 24.
The filmmaker was also nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for the movie which centred on gang violence in LA.
Singleton also directed the “Remember the Time” music video for Michael Jackson, which featured Eddie Murphy, Iman and Magic Johnson.
In 1997, his film Rosewood, a historical drama about racial violence, was entered into the 47th Berlin International Film Festival.
His other work includes Shaft, Poetic Justice, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Baby Boy, and Higher Learning.
In recent years, he has worked on TV shows directing episodes of Empire, American Crime Story and Billions.
Is he in a coma?
The 51-year-old director suffered a stroke while in hospital after falling ill on Wednesday April 24, 2019.
However, on April 29, it was reported that his family had told Fox4 that he had died.
But his publicist has since revealed that Singleton is still alive and is on life support receiving “great medical care”, reports TMZ.
The confusion may arise from a dispute between two sides of the family of the director’s estate, although that could not immediately be confirmed by Sun Online.
TMZ added John admitted himself to hospital after his leg became weak following a trip to Costa Rica.
John’s family have now released a statement to Metro.co.uk which read: “On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital.

“John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care.
“We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues.”
How many children does he have?
Singleton has five children and has been married twice.
He has two kids with first wife Tosha Lewis and one daughter with his second spouse Ghanian actress Akousa Busia.
The director has two other daughters from two other relationships.
