London Marathon medals sold on eBay hours after race finishes

London Marathon runners are cashing in by flogging their medals within hours of finishing the race.

Participants began listing their finishers’ medals on eBay while the iconic event was still underway – and some have already sold them.

One amateur athlete offered buyers a bundle, including his electronic chip and official T-shirt, and it has netted him £120.

Another 2019 runner has said they have ‘no requirement’ for the medal, as it is their 14th London Marathon, and even admitted they sold last year’s too.

The seller, called Odeon1085, said: ‘That time of year again.

‘For sale is a genuine London Marathon 2019 Finishers Medal.

‘This is my 14th year running London and I have no requirement for the medal as I take away the memories and time spent with friends.

‘The start line still gives me chills!’

They added: ‘Please check my feedback as you will see I am a genuine eBayer, my last purchase being trainers for the race, and the last item I sold, last year’s medal.’

According to the seller’s eBay history, they pocketed £67 for their 2018 medal.

This year’s is currently at more than £50 will several hours still left on the online auction.

One London Marathon finisher says they will donate all the money made from their medal to charity.

‘All proceeds to Bloodwise charity 100% so please bid generously,’ they said.

More than 40,000 runners took to the streets of London today, including Olympic athlete Sir Mo Farah.

The Brit athlete finished in fifth place, as the annual event celebrated raising £1 billion.

Sir Andy Murray fired the starting gun to kick of the 39th anniversary of the race.

Some 444,168 people applied in the ballot for a place – 7.3 per cent more than last year – while 42,000 have taken part.
