Second motorcyclist in a week dies in South Bay freeway crash
A motorcyclist was killed in a crash that shut down the northbound lanes of Highway 101 in San Mateo County early Saturday morning, authorities said.
The motorcyclist collided with a Jeep SUV around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, just south of the Willow Road exit, near the border between Menlo Park and East Palo Alto, according to California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials said it’s not clear how the collision happened, but both the motorcycle and the SUV were badly damaged.
The 34-year-old motorcyclist, who authorities did not publicly identify, died at the scene.
All northbound lanes of Highway 101 were shut down for about an hour, according to CHP. Two lanes remained closed for another three hours after that.
The Jeep driver, a 35-year-old San Jose man, was not injured in the crash. CHP officials said he has cooperated with their investigation and there is no sign he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The motorcyclist was the second to die on a South Bay freeway in a week. On Wednesday, a man riding a motorcycle died after he was run over by a rock hauler on southbound Interstate 280 in San Jose.
