A mum-of-two and her friend have been named as the two women who died after going for a midnight swim in the North Sea.

Karolina Pisarska, 36, and Luiza Koniuszy, 22, were found face-down off the coast of Aberdeen after emergency services were called at around 12.45am on Friday.

They were rushed to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary but could not be saved and were pronounced dead a short time later.

It is understood the taxi driver who drove them to the beach was the one who raised the alarm.

Karolina and Luiza had left him waiting while they swam, and he alerted the police when they did not return, according to the Sun.

The pair were originally from Poland but had made their home in Aberdeen and met while attending a local college.

They were understood to enjoy swimming, and had gone just a few weeks earlier.

A friend described their deaths as ‘beyond comprehension’.

They added: ‘They were out swimming at the beach a few weeks ago and nothing happened. They didn’t see it as dangerous, just a bit of a laugh.

‘They didn’t think anything could go wrong.’

But Coastguard area commander Ross Greenhill said: ‘The water temperature is quite unforgiving at this time of year when the air temperature starts to rise.

‘The cold water takes you by surprise. It’s a warm air temperature, they jump in and suddenly it’s a lot colder.

‘There were quite substantial waves and the tide was all the way in. It was reasonably rough.’

Chief Inspector Martin Mackay said the two victims ‘sadly underestimated the conditions’ when they went for a swim.

He added: ‘Our seas can be extremely unforgiving, conditions can change rapidly and I can’t stress enough the dangers of entering the water at any time of the day or night when you are not suitably prepared.’

Detectives have launched an investigation but have said there do not seem to be any suspicious circumstances.

They described the deaths as ‘tragic accidents’.
