Quigg suffers arm injury, out of April 26 fight

Scott Quigg suffered what he’s called a “total freak accident” in training, and announced that he’s out of his scheduled April 26 fight with Jayson Velez, which was to be part of the Srisaket Sor Rungvisai-Juan Francisco Esrada II undercard on DAZN.
“In my final week of heavy preparation before tapering down, I suffered an injury durring sparring (on April 15), a total freak accident where I hit my sparring partner with a left hook and my elbow jarred and the tendon ripped clean off my bicep and elbow,” he wrote on social media.
“I went straight to see a specialist and had scans which confirmed the damage of what I’d felt, and will need surgery to reattach my tendon, which will be done this coming Tuesday by the specialist.”
Quigg (35-2-2, 26 KO) is a former super bantamweight titleholder, and last year fought featherweight titleholder Oscar Valdez in a war in California, losing a decision and breaking Valdez’s jaw. Quigg missed weight for that fight, though, and moved up to super featherweight for an Oct. 2018 win over Mario Briones.
Velez (28-5-1, 20 KO) was figured to be a stepping stone for the 30-year-old Quigg en route to something bigger at super featherweight.
“Gutted isn’t the word, I’m absolutely devastated after all the work and training me and my team have put in this camp, and also with being so close to the fight,” Quigg said.
He expects to make a full recovery and continue his career after surgery and rehabilitation.
