2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC63 Promises More Tech and Even Better Handling
Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz revealed updated versions of both the GLC and the GLC Coupe. At the time, though, we only had information and images for the base GLC300 models. At the New York auto show this week, Mercedes followed that reveal up with the introduction of the ultra-hot GLC63 and GLC63 S Coupe.
As you can see, the face-lifted hot-rod crossovers both retain their AMG styling treatments, but now they have new head- and taillight designs, the latest AMG grille with vertical slats, an updated sport exhaust, a new gray paint option, and a fresh set of optional 21-inch wheels. And even if you miss the AMG badges, the large front intakes make it clear you’re looking at a high-performance GLC. Under the hood, the twin-turbocharged V-8 in the GLC63 still makes the same 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque as before, while the S model’s power is similarly unchanged at 503 horses and 516 lb-ft. Paired with a nine-speed automatic, Mercedes estimates zero-to-60-mph times of 3.8 seconds for the regular SUV and 3.6 seconds for the S coupe.
Sadly, if you want the GLC63 S with conventional crossover styling, you’re still out of luck, as Mercedes-AMG will once again only offer the hottest GLC in four-door “coupe” form.
In addition to the cosmetic changes, Mercedes has imbued these all-wheel-drive super-CUVs with more technology. That includes the latest version of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system and a new AMG steering wheel with an integrated drive-mode selector that has its own digital screen. You can choose from five drive modes in the GLC63 and six in the 63 S, the addition being a new Slippery drive mode that should make the car easier to drive in the rain and on other low-traction surfaces. All models get an electronically locking differential, too, to better put the power down.
Mercedes says both updated AMG crossovers will hit U.S. dealers toward the end of this year.
