Quillin-Truax ends in no contest due to clash of heads

It was must-win. Nobody won. Nobody lost, either.

On this ridiculous Saturday night, we had three boxing cards running on top of one another. That’s silly enough, but much weirder is that every card had a fight end in a no-contest due to a cut caused by an accidental clash of heads.

First, it was Otto Wallin and Nick Kisner in the Showtime opener. Then, it was Diego De La Hoya and Enrique Bernache in the DAZN co-feature. And finally, we got a main event to complete it all, as Peter Quillin and Caleb Truax were stopped after two rounds for the exact same thing.

Quillin (34-1-1, 23 KO) and Truax (30-4-2, 19 KO) were in an IBF super middleweight eliminator for a shot at the belt held by Caleb Plant. There is the chance of a rematch being ordered, but following logic in boxing is usually a bad idea, so who knows?

“This was an injury that was right at the eyebrow,” the ringside physician said after the fight. “It was a very deep cut that extended down to the bony tissue, and the blood was interfering with the fighter’s vision.”

He added that Truax said he could not see due to the bleeding.

“I wanted to put on a good fight, and unfortunately it ended in the second round or whatever it was,” Truax said. “I couldn’t see out of my right eye, but my left eye was fine. I could’ve fought with one eye, but it’s up to the doctor.”

“I would want to do it again, either here in Minnesota or come back to Brooklyn, my home,” Quillin said.

Joey Spencer UD-6 Osias Vasquez

This was meant to be a GIF-worthy sort of showcase for Spencer, a 19-year-old junior middleweight prospect, but it was kind of a chore, honestly. The fight just never sparked, even in that “prospect vs can” sort of way. Spencer is now 7-0 (6 KO), and won on scores of 59-53, 60-52, and 60-52, dropping Vasquez to 4-3 (0 KO).
