Pochettino’s responds to being asked if Alderweireld will be at Spurs next season

Mauricio Pochettino was asked by the media at today’s press conference to provide an update on Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Spurs manager was speaking ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League match against Huddersfield Town at the new stadium and completely avoided answering the direct question.

Spurs triggered a 12-month extension on the Belgian’s deal at the beginning of the year after failing to reach an agreement over a new contract.  However, by taking up the extension, the club activated a £25million release clause which will run up until the last two weeks of this summer’s transfer window.

Alderweireld has notched up over 100 appearances in his four seasons in North London and has been showing some of his best form during the current campaign.

A whole host of European clubs have been linked with a move for the 30-year-old, with the vast majority of Spurs fans desperate for the club to finally get him to commit his future to the club before the summer transfer window opens.

Pochettino told Football.London when asked about Vertonghen and Alderweireld’s performance against Man City, along with directly being prompted for an update on Toby’s future: “When we talk about performance it is about collective performance. If you didn’t concede goals it is more about Hugo because he saved the penalty. Then the performance was good from them and the whole team, but I am so happy but we can not talk about one or two players. The effort was there from the whole players.”
