What the heck are the Kings doing firing head coach Dave Joerger?

I … I don’t get it.

The Sacramento Kings just finished one of the more promising seasons in over a decade, a 39-43 year in which the hapless franchise came close to the playoffs for a solid stretch of 2018-19 and showed there’s a core in place to build on with Buddy Hield (who’s there as a result of the DeMarcus Cousins trade), De’Aaron Fox, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Willie Cauley-Stein and first-rounder Marvin Badgley. They even made a deal for Harrison Barnes and his awful contract.

And they had Dave Joerger at the helm, some stability at the head coaching position who turned the Kings into a fast, fun-to-watch product, which fit the speedy Fox.

But on Thursday, GM Vlade Divac fired Joerger and others in the organization.

Why? If you’re in the middle of a rebuild with a philosophy that showed some promise, why get rid of the guy who gave the franchise its most wins since 2005-06, coincidentally the last time the Kings made the postseason?

Here are some reported answers:

A power play? Now? This is the kind of thing that has the potential to set back the franchise yet again.

Think about the Trust the Process Philadelphia 76ers or the Brooklyn Nets. They hired coaches and stuck with them through some tough times — Kenny Atkinson counts despite just two losing seasons — as they built a culture and philosophy. You want some stability, especially from a coach that just lifted the Kings out of the mire and put them on a course to start competing soon. A firing like this has the possibility of trickling down to the locker room, where there might be players who loved playing for Joerger and who then don’t trust the front office’s long-term plan.

Joerger deserved some Coach of the Year votes, not a pink slip.
