EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR was on target for Togo, but he failed to lead his country to African Cup of Nations qualification.
Togo were edged out 2-1 by Benin in a game they had to win to stand any chance of reaching the finals.
David Djigla opened the scoring for the home side before the 35-year-old rolled back the years to level it on 72 minutes.
Huddersfield striker Steve Mounie broke Togo hearts with the winner late on to qualify for the finals for the first time in nine years.
Benin finish second in Group D behind winners Algeria who drew 1-1 with Gambia in their final game.
Adebayor has 81 caps for his country and has scored 31 goals.
He played for his country in the 2006 African Cup of Nations finals in Egypt but they finished bottom of their group losing all three games.
Later that year Adebayor and Togo were at the World Cup in Germany, but again the tournament ended in disappointment with defeat in all three Group G games.
The former Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham forward is currently with Super Lig leaders Istanbul Basaksehir.
Since joining in January 2017 the forward has scored 24 in 48 appearances.
