We had a productive day to end Tom and Laura’s week of mountaineering yesterday but high winds and heavy rain meant that we split the day between The Ice Factor and Onich Slabs. Today, the start of a Winter Skills Weekend, has been a totally different day. In bright sunshine and in the best underfoot snow conditions that I think I’ve seen all winter John and myself took Dan, Lee and Ty into the back corries of Aonach Mor where we where able to cover a whole raft of skills. Moving along in a logical progression we covered the use of the boot as a tool, the use of an axe and then crampons. We also took the time to build an understanding of just what creates and contributes to an avalanche hazard before journeying up the steep ground from the Climbers Col and onto the summit plateau of Aonach Mor. A big thanks to guide Phil Dowthwaite not just for the use of his 60m rope but also in standing at the top and belaying for us!
