The New York Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals this afternoon at First Data Field at a close score of 6-5. ( Box Score )
Jeurys Familia got the rare start for the Mets against the Nationals this afternoon and pitched a perfect inning, giving up no earned runs while striking out two batters.
Kyle Dowdy worked three shutout innings, allowing three hits, two walks, and struck out two batters. Dowdy hasn’t really had an impressive Spring. His ERA after today’s outing is still at 7.36.
Luis Avilan pitched 1 2/3 innings and surrendered one earned run while striking out two batters in his outing. He has been tremendous in his relief appearances this Spring otherwise at an ERA of 2.38.
Tim Peterson came in to face catcher Kurt Suzuki in the top of the sixth with no runners on base with two outs. Peterson got Suzuki to ground-out to third-baseman Will Toffey to complete the scoreless 1-2-3 inning.
Peterson had a total of 1 2/3 innings of work. He was charged with three earned runs, gave up four hits, and walked one.
Daniel Zamora came into relieve Peterson in the eighth to try and keep the tying and go-ahead runs from scoring. Zamora struggled immensely letting four runs come across to score (two earned).
Zach Lee pitched a scoreless 1-2-3 ninth to end the Mets day on the pitching side.
Michael Conforto slammed a towering two-run home run in the bottom of the 1st, off of right-handed pitcher Joe Ross to get the Mets offense rolling 2-0. That was his third straight game in which he hit a two-run homer.
Carlos Gomez got into his first Spring game in a Mets uniform since 2007. Gomez ended up grounding out to shortstop in his first at-bat, he went 0-for-2 overall.
As the first baseman competition continues between Dominic Smith and Pete Alonso, Smith got the start at first base he went 1-for-4, driving in one run.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Brandon Nimmo got on base with a lead-off single to start off the inning. Rajai Davis followed with another base hit, giving the Mets runners at first and second now.
Pete Alonso got his first at-bat of the day as a pinch hitter and got a hard-hit single off the pitcher Erick Fedde with loaded the bases with nobody out. One batter later Dominic Smith reached on a fielding error by shortstop Adrian Sanchez which allowed two runners to come around to score to cut the deficit 6-5.
The team would not be able to score the one run they would need to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, though.
The New York Mets will be playing the Miami Marlins tomorrow at Roger Dean Stadium at 1:05 p.m. Zack Wheeler (1-1, 2.25 ERA)will be starting for the Mets and he will be facing Dan Straily (1-0, 7.15 ERA) of the Marlins. This game will not be televised on SNY, and it will not be broadcasted on the radio.
