“Good playing, kid.”
Rory McIlroy won his first Players Championship after putting on a show down the stretch of an absolutely wild final round Sunday at TPC Sawgrass.
His tap-in par on 18 allowed him to edge 48-year-old Jim Furyk by one stroke and it also pushed him into an elite group with Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.
Moments after his victory on Sunday, McIlroy was walking through the clubhouse with some tournament officials when he mentioned that he had received 86 text messages since his win.
The biggest one was from Tiger, a player McIlroy grew up idolizing as a kid and has since bonded with a number of times over the years on Tour.
While McIlroy is a star in the sport and a future Hall of Famer, he seemed to still by thrilled to get a text from Tiger.
Tiger said: “Good playing, kid. Just awesome stuff.”
I love how Tiger called the 29-year-old, four-time major winner kid. Gotta think Tiger would love to have a Sunday showdown with the kid in a few weeks at the Masters.
I know I’d love that.
