SOUTHAMPTON legend Matt Le Tissier is one of his generation’s brightest talents.
Blessed with a wand of a left-foot, ‘Le God’ was responsible for some of the most memorable goals of the early Premier League era – but was never fully rewarded with the England caps many thought he deserved.
A ONE-CLUB player, Le Tissier joined Southampton in 1985 from Guernsey and broke into their first-team just a year later.
The talented attacking-midfielder wasn’t especially quick, but made up for it with exceptional close control, pin-point passing and eye for the spectacular.
He is the second-highest ever scorer for Southampton after netting 209 goals in 540 games for the Saints, whilst he was also renowned for penalty taking during a near two-decade career.
Le Tissier converted 47 of the 48 penalties that he took for Southampton, his only miss when Mark Crossley denied him from the spot in March 1993.
Born in Saint Peter Port, Guernsey in 1968, Le Tissier is currently 50 years old.
DESPITE being a prolific scorer in the top-flight throughout his career, Le Tissier never fully established himself as a regular England international.
He gained just EIGHT Three Lions’ caps, with his debut coming in 15 February 1995.
Glenn Hoddle famously overlooked him for the France 98 squad despite Le Tissier’s sparkling form for both England B and Southampton – he never featured again in an England shirt.
In those eight international appearances, he failed to score once.
LE TISSIER married his childhood sweetheart Cathy in 1990, with the pair meeting as 16-year-olds in Guernsey.
They had two children together, Mitchell and Keeleigh.
The couple divorced in 1997, with the Saints star going on to wed current wife Angela Nebusi in 2008.
