An image of two children wearing fancy dress has sparked debate on Twitter, with hundreds of users calling it ‘sexist’
AN image of two children dressing up as a nurse and a doctor has sparked debate online, with hundreds of social media users calling it “sexist”.
The image was shared on @TheMedicalShots Twitter account, captioned: “This is cute, isn’t it?” – but users were far from impressed.
The image shows two small children – thought to be a little boy and a little girl – walking hand-in-hand down a hospital corridor and dressed in scrubs.
However, the outfits the children are wearing have sparked debate on Twitter.
While the little girl is wearing pink scrubs reading “nurse in training” the little boy’s green scrubs read: “Doctor in training”.
The popular tweet has over 20,000 likes but hundreds of social media users have called the image “sexist”.
One wrote: “Why isn’t she a Dr as well? Or why is the boy not a nurse?”
While another said: “The children are cute. The sexism on their backs is NOT.”
Another accused the account of tweeting “from the year 1950”.
One user called it “extremely sexist” while another said: “Please don’t limit anyone, regardless of age, based upon their gender.”
Others Photoshopped the image so both of the kids’ scrubs read “doctor in training” while another changed them to “medical professional in training”.
Another user said they had “fixed” the image, posting a series of edited photographs of both children wearing the same coloured scrubs.
Others, however, slammed users who had been calling the image sexist, explaining they were “assuming” the child wearing pink is a girl and the child wearing green is a boy.
One said: “Why presume that the child on the right is a boy? They are in a hospital.
“It could be that the child on the right is the patient who is undergoing a treatment that causes hair loss. It is an equally valid presumption.”
While another said: “Why do people assume gender based on a hairstyle?”
