Police arrest INEC official for allegedly altering election result

- The INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, says an officer of the commission in Imo has been accused of altering election results

- Yakubu notes that the electoral commission will not spare any officer of the commission found to be involved in any election malpractice

An official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been handed over to the police for investigation and prosecution over alleged violation of electoral process, the commission’s chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, has said.

Yakubu, who made the disclosure on Sunday, February 24, at a media briefing in Abuja, said the commission will not tolerate attempts by individuals include its own staff to compromise the electoral process across Nigeria.

“For our part, all election duty personnel have sworn and oath of neutrality, we have reports of possible dereliction by some electoral officials in refusing to activate or deploy the smart card readers, the failure to fully account for materials collected for election, absconding from duty and a host of other infractions,” Mahmood said.

The INEC boss promised that the officer would be investigated and if found guilty would made to face the full wrath of the law.

“The duty of upholding the choice made by Nigerians in democratic elections must never be compromised,” he said.

In another report, the police in Kogi state have confirmed three people dead in the state ahead of the rescheduled presidential and National Assembly elections on Sunday, February 24.

The command spokesman, William Aya, also a deputy superintendent of police, made this known in Lokaja, The Nation reports.

The spokeman stated that two of the three died in Anyigba town and Odolu town on election day, Saturday, February 24.
