Police release body cam video of December SWAT standoff
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have released body camera video from a SWAT situation in December, in which a man was shot after pulling a fake gun on officers.
The department released three separate body camera videos from the Dec. 1 shooting of Bobby Morgan on Winfield Drive in southeast Charlotte. Morgan was injured in the shooting after investigators said he refused to drop his gun, which was later revealed to be a replica.
In the nearly two hours of video released Friday, SWAT officers could be seen rushing towards Morgan who was injured on the ground following a standoff where Morgan had barricaded himself inside his home.
Investigators said Morgan showed a gun and repeatedly ignored officers commands.
"I did not see a gun. I cannot say at any point there wasn't a gun. I could not myself say I saw a gun," said Robert Dawkins from SAFE Coalition NC.
Dawkins watched the videos for the first time Friday. He made a request to a judge that CMPD release body cam footage from the shooting.
Investigators said they had interactions with Morgan in the past and he reportedly had a mental illness.
"I was happy at the fact he was rendered aid. I was happy at the fact that commands were given. What my next ask would be was before the video how much descalation was used in a mental state."
Since the Dec. 1 shooting, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have announced plans to expand their Crisis Intervention Team, which would pair mental health professionals with officers.
