NATURAL elements, minimalist bed set-ups, and cozy reading areas are what’s new in bedroom trends – so what’s gone out of style?
You may be shocked to learn that a “classic” element of your bedroom, like your impressive collection of pretty pillows, is no longer on-trend.
Natural, minimal elements and cozy seating are new trends in bedrooms[/caption] To stay on-trend, it’s time to ditch the throw pillows piled on your bed[/caption]Speaking to Insider, six interior designers said throw pillows, symmetrical nightstands, and even TVs in the bedroom are all falling out of favor.
Here are the little changes you can make to your bedroom now to be up-to-date, and the things you should ditch for spring.
The big trend in home decor is natural elements. Adding live plants, earth tones, and “cottagecore” accents will bring your bedroom up to speed.
“People are continuing to be more mindful of the environment and also realizing the benefits of incorporating wellness and nature into design,” said Sarit Marcus, founder of “eco chic” decor company Minted Space.

“Bringing the outdoors in is continuing in its popularity both in corporate and residential spaces.”
The “cottagecore” aesthetic that’s taken over Instagram and TikTok lends itself to those natural elements, too, said Dan Wiener of Homedude.
Wiener said that thoughtfully-chosen furniture and a palette of neutrals, greens, and muted blues can create the “relaxed, inviting” vibe of cottagecore aesthetics.
“A touch of cottagecore in your bedroom decor can make it feel like a little slice of heaven, no matter what the weather is like outside,” Wiener explained.
Marcus said that matching nightstands and lamps on either side of the bed were a longtime staple of bedroom decor, but that era is finally drawing to a close.
“Matching, perfectly symmetrical bedroom design is on its way out,” Marcus said. “There is nothing perfect about this world.”
Similarly, it’s time to ditch the tall pile of throw pillows on your bed – or on the floor surrounding your bed.
Buying a dozen pillows just because they “match” your duvet cover or bedspread is no longer in fashion.
Lindsey Jamison, the lead designer at Rumor Designs, said “layers and layers of throw pillows” make a bedroom feel tedious.
“Simplicity is key,” said Jamison.
When it comes to your bed, the trend for 2022 is no-frill, no-fuss sheets and bedding, said Jessica Welling.
“Think solid-colored duvets with a washed-cotton look, textured throw blankets, and a couple of bold accent pillows,” the designer explained.
The simple bedding will let you put the spotlight on another trendy pick: seating options.
Small, cushioned chairs, especially in those much-desired natural materials, are popping up in bedrooms, said Shannon Connor.
Creating a reading nook for decompression before bed is a must, the designer added.
Two more bedroom staples are going out the window in 2022.
All-white furniture, the longtime hallmark of minimalist spaces, is too clinical and stark for modern bedrooms, designers said.
“There’s a big move toward natural finishes like wood and rattan,” Welling said, noting that sterile white surfaces don’t mesh with the earthy trend.
And Wilfredo Emanual said that TVs have been inching their way out of bedrooms as families change how they interact with the medium.

“More people are gravitating towards family spaces like the den and living room to watch TV together,” Emanuel explained.
That means they’re less likely to fall asleep binge-watching Netflix on a big screen above the bed – especially if they have a comfy reading nook to wind down in.
