A WOMAN has shared the heartwarming text she received from her soon-to-be-married ex-boyfriend thanking her for being his ‘first love’ – but Twitter users can’t decide it’s ‘sweet’ or ‘weird’.
Alexsa Sanchez Aguilar took to the social media site to post screenshots of the conversation, admitting she was ‘speechless’ to read the message in which he credited her with teaching him ‘how to love’.
After checking he had the right number, the ex-boyfriend wrote: “I’m getting married tomorrow. I wanted to send this message (my fiancé knows I’m sending this to you).
“Thank you for being my first love. Thank you for always encouraging me, thank you for keeping me out of trouble, thank you for the times you took care of me when I was sick and depressed.
“Thank you for loving me. If you haven’t already I hope one day you find love. If you loved me that much when we were young, I can only imagine how strong and powerful your love is now.
“The way your heart is made is amazing. I know we were only kids when we dated but you taught me what love is.
“To the man who is lucky enough to have you as their wife, I hope he treats you with care, I hope he knows who he has in front of him, I hope he shows you love and loyalty. You deserve that and more.
“My point in all of this is, you are the reason why I know how to love someone. You taught me love, you taught me how to deal with my anger and how to live life to the fullest and I’m grateful for you.”
Alexsa’s post quickly went viral and in just three days, has received more than 416,000 likes and thousands of comments, many of which debating whether it was a sweet gesture or not.
“This has to be the most beautiful and sweet thing I’ve ever read,” wrote one woman. “Shout out to both of you for being such damn good people.”
“I wish one of my ex’s appreciated all the sacrifices I’ve made like this,” said another.
While a third agreed: “Imagine having an ex this mature. He’s shown how he appreciated her and is grateful for who she shaped him to be.”
But other’s weren’t so convinced by his message, despite the man explaining he’d got permission from his fiancé to send the heartfelt message.
“If I was the new girl I’d be a little weirded out that you wanted to send a paragraph to your ex girlfriend and express your feelings,” wrote one woman. “In my opinion, that’s weird.”
“He’s basically thanking you for moulding him to be the perfect husband to someone that’s not you?” pointed out another. “Feels unnecessary to me.”
A third concurred: “I would die if I moulded a man to be the perfect husband for another woman.”
Some were more surprised by the negative responses in the comment section, telling those against it to ‘grow up’ and start supporting each other.
“You all have the emotional maturity of a five year old – grow up,” one person scathingly wrote.
While a second said: “You’re all acting like he’s telling her he’s still in love with her! He’s literally just thanking her for the time they had together. Not everyone is made for each other.
“Your first love is someone truly special. They’re your first love and often your first heartbreak. Some of you are clearly still sour.”
Alexsa went on to explain that the pair didn’t work out because they were ‘extremely young’ but had a lot of respect for each other even after their breakup after ‘losing their best friend to suicide’.
She’s since posted her reply to her ex, which reads: “I’m crying. Congratulations on all the beautiful blessings coming your way. Than you for your kind words.
“I am so unbelievably proud of you, you did everything you put your mind to and you killed it. I’m happy you found the woman you want to forever with. I’m happy you’re happy.
“Your fiancé is such a beautiful soul and you have such a beautiful daughter. Again, congratulations on your marriage and I wish you and your beautiful family nothing but blessings.”
Alexsa also had some choice words for those who criticised her ex: “To the people saying they would cancel the wedding if their partner did what me ex did…
“I don’t see why you should. He never flirted with me, he simply thanked me for helping him be a better version of himself. It’s not that he still love me, it’s simply him having respect towards me.
“It’s not him rubbin git in my face he found someone, it’s him thanking me for showing him how to love. And it’s not to say his wife didn’t show him all that as she obviously did.”
