Ange Postecoglou has made an interesting point about the younger members of his squad during his press conference ahead of Tottenham’s fixture against Southampton.
Tottenham have had some extraordinary youngsters in the past decade, such as Harry Kane and Dele, and Ange Postecoglou has signed a number of prospects since arriving at Spurs, including three teenagers in the summer transfer window.
While this holds promise for the future, Spurs supporters have pointed out that in many of their matches this season, few of their new signings have been involved in the starting lineup.
But with a number of injuries throughout the Tottenham first-team squad, the less senior players have had to step up and play their part, which Postecoglou believes could help the club in the long run.
Postecoglou was asked in his press conference about playing youngsters in the difficult situation Tottenham find themselves in, but he has chosen to focus on the positive aspects this will ultimately bring about.
Responding to the question, he said: “You don’t want to by design, but it will bear fruit for us for sure,” (FootballLondon).
There is no doubt that Postecoglou is happy with the way some of his players are developing. After the 1-1 draw with Rangers, he praised Archie Gray for his ‘outstanding’ contribution playing a big game at centre-back, which is not his preferred position, while he lauded Lucas Bergvall, describing his performance as ‘excellent’.
While Postecoglou has admitted he does not want to put his less experienced players under too much pressure, giving them game time could be the best option considering the underwhelming performances of some senior players.
Postecoglou himself called out Timo Werner after his lacklustre first-half display against Rangers, which saw him hooked off at half-time, declaring it ‘unacceptable’ for a German international when there were 18-year-olds playing.
Starting players like Bergvall and Gray more often is what the supporters want to see and is only likely to help the promising players improve and progress in their careers.
