Pauline Chalamet (yes, that Chalamet) is starting to open up about motherhood after quietly welcoming a baby girl with boyfriend Rhys Raiskin earlier this year. When Nylon spoke with Chalamet in late October for a recently published cover story, Chalamet’s daughter was only 7 weeks old and the actress was dealing with standard stuff. The inevitable sleep deprivation. The inability to meet her standard one-book-per-week average (!!!). All of which is “normal” (if maddening) for a new parent.
The only “major hiccup,” the outlet said, was Chalamet’s viral, unplanned birth announcement. An onlooker caught a video of Chalamet at Stella McCartney’s Paris Fashion Week Show excitedly telling director Greta Gerwig, “I just had a baby” before turning to Raiskin and adding, “We just had a baby.”
What was supposed to be a private moment, quickly made headlines, robbing Chalamet of the chance to make an official public announcement herself.
“None of my friends had any empathy for me,” the star of The Sex Lives of College Girls said. “They were like, ‘You were at a social event.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, but what?'”
It’s not like she said it on stage at a social event, willingly sharing the news with the world. She didn’t know she was being recorded. She was talking with a friend and a roaming camera caught the interaction that — at the very least — will make “quite the humblebrag” for her daughter in the future. (“The world found out about me when my mom was talking to the Barbie director at Paris Fashion Week. No biggie.”)
When asked by Nylon if her boyfriend Thimothée’s girlfriend Kylie Jenner — who is the proud mom of two — gave her parenting tips, Chalamet gave a sweet if vague answer. “I appreciate all the people in my life who have children and the advice they have to give.”
Last week, Chalamet appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show with her The Sex Lives of College Girls castmates and the show’s creator, Mindy Kaling. Chalamet told Barrymore that Kaling — who is mom to daughters Kit, Spencer, and Anne — was one of the first people to know about the pregnancy.
“I called her. I was like, ‘Ok, we’re about to start [filming], and, surprise!'” Chalamet said, per People. “And she was … just so supportive and had the best advice because … Mindy does it all.”
“So she was like, “Yeah, ok, no problem. And this is how we’ll handle it.’ And everyone was so supportive.”
