The Red Sox didn’t win the Juan Soto sweepstakes, but they could end up with a nice consolation prize.
Soto could have revolutionized Boston’s roster, but fortunately for Craig Breslow and company, there still are a handful of impact bats available in free agency. The name most frequently attached to the Red Sox has been Teoscar Hernández, who’s coming off an excellent first season in Los Angeles.
While one Hernández report filed immediately after Soto’s reported agreement with the New York Mets wasn’t very encouraging for Boston, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi believes the Red Sox have a legitimate shot of signing the two-time All-Star.
“The Red Sox are a very interesting fit,” Morosi said on “Hot Stove” on Monday. “Teoscar has played before in the American League East. His career numbers at Fenway Park are excellent. So I do believe, whether it happens today, tomorrow or later on in the week, the Dodgers or the Red Sox are in good position to Teoscar Hernández.”
While Hernández reportedly prefers to stay in Chavez Ravine, he has “long been intrigued” about playing for Boston. And after missing out on Soto, the Red Sox might be extra motivated to add some thump to their batting order.
If not Hernández, another free-agent slugger with AL East experience would make sense for Boston.
