Paul Merson believes that recent results will not influence the match between Tottenham and Fulham, predicting a shocking outcome.
Tottenham Hotspur host Fulham in a match where they will be looking to carry on from their emphatic 4-0 win against Manchester City in the Premier League.
Spurs will put behind them a hectic 2-2 draw with Roma in the Europa League and aim to close the gap on the Premier League top four.
Fulham will want to bounce back after a 4-1 loss at home to Wolves and have had a full week to prepare for their trip to North London.
Former Arsenal midfielder, Paul Merson, believes that these results may not indicate the outcome of the next game.
Speaking to Sportskeeda, he said: “Despite Tottenham beating Manchester City 4-0 and Fulham losing 4-1 to Wolves, it wouldn’t surprise me if Spurs drop points in this game! That is how this club works.
“Tottenham can either wipe the floor with teams or comfortably get beat. Remember it was only two weeks ago they lost 2-1 to an Ipswich side that had not won until then.
“I reckon this will be a tough game for Spurs and I’m actually backing Fulham in this one. I don’t think Fulham are as bad as the scoreline against Wolves suggests. They are a decent team and can upset any of the big boys in this division on their day. I have a feeling that will happen against Tottenham.
Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Fulham
It is not surprising to hear a former Arsenal player make sweeping generalisations about ‘who Tottenham are’, but his prediction of the game is quite realistic.
Tottenham have struggled in their matches after Europa League fixtures, with fatigue a significant issue. Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski and the whole defence bar Archie Gray are likely to play again after their 90 minutes on Thursday. The Spurs squad will need to dig deep for a result.
Despite losing 1-4, the xG for Fulham vs Wolves was relatively even. A hot scoring streak for Wolves made the loss appear more damning than it was and Fulham are still a team that could put a weakened Spurs squad to the sword.
