PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A West Linn man was taken into police custody after attempting to avoid a traffic stop for driving under the influence of intoxicants, according to law enforcement.
The Portland Police Bureau reported that the incident occurred at about 5 p.m. on Monday evening, around Interstate 205 northbound near Southeast Sunnyside Road. The agency said a member of the Major Crash Team noticed a 26-year-old driver “weaving” in his lane and nearly hitting another vehicle, prompting the officer to begin a traffic stop.
However, PPB said the suspect accelerated his vehicle backward and into a patrol car in an attempt to avoid the stop. Police reported that the officer “drew his firearm to gain compliance” when the driver exited his vehicle and saw the patrol car, but he instead re-entered the vehicle and fled the scene.
Officers said a Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted the driver and was able to conduct a second traffic stop, which resulted in a field sobriety test. The suspect was later lodged in the Clackamas County Jail and charged with DUII and reckless driving.
Officials reported he could face additional charges. The Portland officer on the scene was not injured.
“I am beyond relieved that nobody in the community was hurt and our officer is okay,” PPB Chief Bob Day said. “This incident highlights the dangers our members face each and every day. I am grateful the individual was taken into custody without doing further harm.”
