Harry Redknapp has picked four Spurs players in his Premier League Team of the Week, remarking that one of those players has never got the credit he deserves over the years.
Not only did Tottenham win 4-0 at the home of the Premier League champions but they did so despite the fact that several of their key men were missing, including their two first-choice centre-backs, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
While a lot of the attention has been on Spurs’ attack, given that they scored four goals, the bigger achievement was the fact that they emerged with a clean sheet despite having a makeshift defence.
Two players who were the most responsible for Tottenham’s clean sheet have made it into Redknapp’s Team of the Week.
Redknapp reserved special praise for Ben Davies, who was making his first Premier League start of the season at the Etihad Stadium.
The Welshman was his composed and reliable self, hardly putting a foot wrong all game, and Redknapp claimed that the 31-year-old has never got the credit he deserved.
The former Spurs manager told BetVictor: “I don’t think Ben Davies has ever got the credit he deserved for both club and country. He is so underrated and has been for so many years, you know exactly what you’re getting from him. He’s composed on the ball, reads the game well and there’s a reason so many top managers have trusted him down the years for Tottenham.”
Redknapp also picked Guglielmo Vicario in his eleven, praising the goalkeeper for denying Erling Halland on several occasions.
He said about the Italian: “In goal this week, it must be Guglielmo Vicario. I don’t think anyone expected him to go away to Manchester City and keep a clean sheet, what an upset that was. He didn’t have loads to do but he dealt with everything that came his way. Erling Haaland had quite a few chances but couldn’t get the better of him.”
No Tottenham fan will be surprised to hear that Dejan Kulusevski made it into Redknapp’s Team of the Week, with the 77-year-old waxing lyrical about his assist for the Lilywhites’ opening goal.
Redknapp said: “I thought Dejan Kulusevski was absolutely world-class the other day against Manchester City. I’ve been singing his praises all season and this was yet another top performance.
“His assist for James Maddison’s goal was just brilliant and some of his touches and passes were sublime. When Tottenham play like they did against City, they can give any side in the league a game.”
However, it was Maddison that the former Spurs boss picked as his Player of the Week, insisting that the attacking midfielder made both of his finishes look easier than they were.
He added: “My Player of the Week this week is James Maddison. Dejan Kulusevski can feel hard done by, but Maddison got a couple of goals so I must pick him. Those two finishes were much, much harder than he made them look, that second in particular, the touch and finish was just world-class. I just wish he could do this on a more consistent basis, I’m such a huge fan of him, he’s a joy to watch when he’s at it like this.”
