Dejan Kulusevski provided an interesting reason as to why he prefers coming up against top teams, just before Tottenham thrashed Man City 4-0 in the Premier League.
Kulusevski built on his impressive start to the season during the international break, delivering two outstanding displays for Sweden as they overcame Serbia and Azerbaijan in the Nations League.
The 24-year-old got two goals and an assist in the latter as his side thrashed the Azerbaijani 6-0 in Stockholm, and he was thus full of confidence ahead of Tottenham‘s trip to the Etihad.
Ange Postecoglou’s men will be reliant on the attacking midfielder to stand up and serve as one of the chief creators for the rest of the season and he has now made a rather interesting comment.
Speaking to the Swedish press before the Man City win, the Tottenham man seemingly took a dig at Azerbaijan by hinting that they used dirty tactics. Kulusevski asserted that he prefers playing bigger teams as they look to play football rather than employing the dark arts.
The former Juventus man said SportBladet: “I think it’s easier [against bigger other teams], because they try to play football. They don’t cheat, it’s more football against the best and I love that, then you meet each other on the same terms.
“They have more quality and we play man-to-man so it becomes more important for the individual to finish his duel, but we are not afraid.”
While Kulusevski was evidently talking about Azerbaijan, the timing of his comments is interesting, given that Tottenham just played Man City – undoubtedly the best in the Premier League across the last five years.
Kulusevski has an outstanding record against Pep Guardiola’s side, with eight goal contributions in eight appearances against them so far.
It does seem that Kulusevski and Tottenham in general prefer to play against ‘big’ sides who perhaps leave a little more space across the pitch and take more risks in the build-up. Spurs have struggled up against low-blocks and smaller teams breaking on them this season, which they need to work on.
