EVER since FIFA and EA parted ways, we’ve been waiting eagerly to see which company will snap up the FIFA license.
FIFA has continually claimed that it will be releasing a new football gaming series with the FIFA branding.
In October, FIFA announced a partnership with Konami to create a FIFAe World Cup, but it still hasn’t released a full football game.
Shortly before World Cup 2022, FIFA launched four NFT ‘games’ and cryptocurrency based apps that knocked the football federation’s credibility.
However, the next gaming venture from FIFA seems to be a little more credible though we have few details about it at this point.
The game will be called FIFA Rivals and is developed by Mythical Games, which also makes NFL Rivals.
FIFA Rivals will launch in mid-2025 and Mythical Games has only released a short teaser trailer for the game.
However, it will likely follow a similar formula to NFL Rivals given that they share a developer.
Despite being a mobile game, NFL Rivals shares a lot of similarities with EA Sports FC.
In both games you open packs of cards in order to create your team, and then play with them on the pitch.
FIFA Rivals will be a free-to-play game and use in-game monetisation in order to turn a profit.
It’s running on Mythical Games’ proprietary platform, which has been developed to increase players’ engagement and in-game spending.
It might not be the FIFA game that people were expecting or wanted, but it’s one step closer to a EA FC competitor than ever before.
We’re not massive fans of the microtransaction model, particularly when the developer is so open about how predatory its practices are.
However, this is a huge leap forward for FIFA given its other attempts, particularly the NFT endeavours.
At this point, it seems unlikely that a major FIFA-licensed game will ever be released and players will have to be content with smaller games like this.
