In early October Pontypridd RFC, in conjunction with the Mid District Rugby Union announced a new competition for the Mid District’s member clubs that participate in the Admiral Welsh Premiership – the new Mid District Premiership Cup, for the 2024/25 season.
For those that missed the initial media release, the league results from when the five Mid District clubs (Pontypridd, Merthyr, Bargoed, Brecon and Ystrad Rhondda) play each other are compiled to form a ‘mini-league’ adjacent to the Welsh Premiership.
When the Mid District member clubs play each other a Premiership win will earn the victorious side 3 points for the Mid District Premiership Cup standings. Should any teams draw against each other they will take 1 point apiece into the Mid District Premiership Cup table.
Come the end of the Welsh Premiership season, which is scheduled to finish on April 26th, the top two in the five-team league will then compete in a Grand Final to determine who will be Mid District Premiership Cup Champions.
There have been a number of matches where the Mid District clubs have competed against each other so far during the first three months of the season, and it’s just points difference separating the top three sides in the standings. Here are the Premiership results involving the Mid District teams to date, and the current table:
14/9/2024 – Pontypridd 34-19 Bargoed
28/9/2024 – Merthyr 61-10 Ystrad Rhondda
12/10/2024 – Ystrad Rhondda 14-22 Brecon
19/10/2024 – Merthyr 35-39 Bargoed
2/11/2024 – Bargoed 31-14 Brecon
9/11/2024 – Merthyr 28-25 Pontypridd
16/11/2024 – Pontypridd 43-11 Brecon
Please note that points for and against will be recorded because if two teams end up being tied on league points, then points difference will be used to determine who progresses. Each team will finish with 8 in the ‘Matches Played’ column so there are a maximum of 24 league points on offer for each club.
An exciting start to proceedings – we will keep you updated with all the key statistics throughout the season.
