As WatchTime New York 2024 is only hours away, the excitement is building for the array of timepieces that will be on display at Gotham Hall in Manhattan this weekend. Among the impressive lineup, Chronoswiss, which is set to present the bold and bright ReSec Helium Manufacture, a new timepiece inspired directly by the sun.
The watch is, in a word, orange. Cheeky, of course, but with creative inspirations. The color itself takes influence from the “stellar alchemy” of the stars, where through a process of nuclear fusion hydrogen atoms come together to form helium, releasing incredible amounts of heat and light, and ultimately yielding through the vacuum of space and the filter of our atmosphere a familiar yellow-orange.
On the wrist, the watch measures 42mm in diameter stands 14.2mm tall, with its straight lugs, slim bezel, and onion-style crown all being familiar Chronoswiss. The 17-part case also features a partial knurling on its sides—another Chronoswiss signature—with the shape in conjunction with the polished bezel seamlessly melding with the slightly domed sapphire crystal.
Differentiating the case is its construction of grade 5 titanium, which in-line with the modern-stellar inspirations of the watch feels appropriate. The titanium construction also makes the bold watch deceivingly light, adding to its innate intrigue beyond color.
The dial of the ReSec Helium is where Chronoswiss’ creativity shines. Its 3D construction features hand-applied guilloché and a vivid orange CVD coating that immediately draws the eye. The off-center hour display at 12 o’clock is balanced by a central minute hand and a retrograde seconds display at 6 o’clock— one of the brand’s hallmark complications. The retrograde seconds hand gracefully sweeps across the lower part of the dial before resetting in a smooth, captivating motion. Ceramic indexes and Super-LumiNova-treated hands enhance legibility, ensuring that the futuristic design is functional as well as visually striking.
Inside, the watch is the Chronoswiss Manufacture Caliber C.6005. The movement beats at 28,800 vph and features a 55-hour power reserve, featuring a Glucydur balance wheel, Nivarox 1 balance spring, and Incabloc shock protection. Visible via a sapphire exhibition caseback, the movement is distinguished by its ruthenium plating and use of Geneva stripes, being equipped with a skeletonized tungsten rotor, marking another future-looking use of materials.
Limited to just 100 pieces, the Chronoswiss ReSec Helium Manufacture is priced at CHF 15,300, or about $17,700 USD at the time of writing.
