What to watch this weekend July 19, 2024: TV awards contenders

Amazon’s popular superhero series “The Boys” has always been a thinly veiled allegory for right-wing politics, but it’s never been as unfortunately timely as it is now. The game-changing Season 4 finale, which is currently streaming on Prime Video, features an assassination attempt on the life of a U.S. president just a few days after a similarly violent incident occurred in the real world. It’s an unbelievable coincidence, and you can choose to watch the episode or not based on this information (Amazon has also added a viewer discretion warning to the beginning of the episode), but the dramatic hour sets up the Emmy-nominated drama for what is sure to be an epic final season. From gruesome deaths to emotional declarations to the unexpected final moments that will leave fans wondering how our ragtag group of heroes can possibly escape what’s coming next, “The Boys” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

If you’d like to opt for something else, though, other contenders include:

• “Simone Biles Rising”: The greatest gymnast of all time is front and center in this revealing new four-part documentary that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the events of the Tokyo Olympics, when Simone Biles was forced to withdraw from the team competition due to her mental health and physical well-being, and her attempt to rebuild and stage a comeback in the aftermath. The first two episodes, which include Biles’ own video diaries, are now streaming on Netflix (the final two parts will stream this fall after Biles competes in her third Olympics).
• “Cobra Kai”: The first batch of episodes from the sixth and final season of the follow-up series to the beloved “Karate Kid” movies is finally here after what feels like years (because it has been). The Emmy-nominated comedy’s swan song is being split into three parts, which is kind of nuts, but these are the times we’re living in. This season finds the kids preparing for the Sekai Taikai, a world championship karate competition. All five episodes of Part 1 are now streaming on Netflix.
• “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!”: I know what you’re thinking: “What the hell is a Kite Man, and why does he have his own TV show?” The answer is that he’s a D-list DC villain (voiced by Matt Oberg) who appeared on Max’s acclaimed animated series “Harley Quinn” and somehow became beloved, and that’s reason enough to give him a spin-off in which he buys a low-rent bar where other wannabe supervillains like to hang out. The series, which also features Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu as the voice of Kite Man’s girlfriend Golden Glider, fits in well with the streaming service’s other superhero-related offerings. The first two episodes are now streaming on Max.
