In early January, Kelly Clarkson made a statement that shocked some of her fans in the wake of her divorce from Brandon Blackstock. “I never wanted to get married the first time,” she told People. While she revealed that she walked down the aisle to honor Blackstock’s religious beliefs and his children from his first marriage, the 41-year-old talk show host had some serious regrets about not listening to her gut instincts.
A source close to Clarkson shared with Life & Style that while she’s “happy to have her kids,” daughter River, 9, and sone Remy, 7, she shouldn’t have married Blackstock. “She regrets legally binding herself to another person,” they explained. With the contentious divorce and Blackstock continually dragging her back to court, including an issue over security cameras while he was living on her Montana ranch, Clarkson was probably exhausted by the expensive legal maneuverings by her ex.
The insider believes that the “Because of You” singer will continue to put her dating life on hold for a while to prioritize herself. “She’s in no rush to be in another relationship,” they added. “She doesn’t yearn for a life partner and has even said she had never been sexually attracted to anyone before Brandon.” That behind-the-scenes intelligence lines up with what Clarkson shared in her People cover story.
“I was single until I was, like, 30, and I forgot how really good at that I am,” she joked to the media outlet. “I told a friend [that a potential partner] would have to be an individual that brings their own life to the table without needing anything from me. It’s far more romantic to say, ‘I want you, but I don’t need anything.’” Clarkson would consider remarrying, but it’s an idea that is in the long distance. “For my kids, I definitely would never even think about it until they’re out of my house,” she noted.
Clarkson has drawn some clear boundaries in her love life as she heals from a divorce that took far longer than it should have. She was ordered by the courts to give her ex a one-time payment of $1.3 million along with $45,600 in monthly child support. In addition, she recently completed paying Blackstock’s monthly spousal support payments of $115,000, a financial obligation that she was reportedly “relieved” was over. We don’t blame her one bit!
