GOP lawmakers have remained committed to the battle against cancel culture by speaking out against the left-wing movement and drafting legislation to keep “woke businesses” in check.
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) said Twitter is part of what he calls the “high-tech oligarchy.” Gohmert spoke on the House floor Friday and slammed the social media giant over its alleged habit of targeting conservatives on the platform.
He specifically noted the recent suspension of Project Veritas Founder James O’Keefe. Gohmert reiterated that Twitter claimed to have taken action against O’Keefe’s account after he allegedly violated its rules on platform manipulation and spam.
The Texas lawmaker suggested it’s an effort to silence opposing viewpoints.
“if you expose the truth about somebody or some entity that Twitter is figuratively in bed with, then Twitter will ban you because they don’t want the truth out there,” Gohmert stated.
Gohmert added, Twitter doesn’t want the truth to get out about Americans being manipulated by Big Tech corporations.
Gohmert’s comments come amid a wave of Republican resistance to Democrat-led cancel culture. The backlash remained mostly aimed at large corporations, such as Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines and the MLB, after all three decided to weigh in on the push for voter integrity in Georgia.
Recent reports detailed a bill sponsored by 29 House Republicans, including Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), seeking to strip the MLB of antitrust protections.
The move stemmed from the League’s decision to pull its All-Star Game from Georgia in protest of the election integrity law. Rep. Jordan himself accused “Big Sports” of working to cancel conservative voices while Boebert said the public has lost trust in the MLB.
Recent reports also detailed a digital ad buy by the Republican State Leadership Committee, which highlighted the effects of left-wing cancel culture. The ad is slated to hit New Jersey as well as Virginia and focuses on what the Committee has the “hypocrisy and self-defeating result of the Democrats cancel culture crusade.”
Along with pointing out Democrat lies about the Georgia voting laws, the ad also made note of how moving the All-Star Game hurts the exact people Democrats have said they’re trying to help.
“Who was hardest hit?” the ad questions. “The concession stand worker planning on overtime. The hotel staff expecting full capacity. The small businesses doing everything they can to survive a pandemic. We must end the cancel culture madness. The left cancelled our jobs. They are coming for yours next.”
According to a poll in early March, 64 percent of Americans believe cultural boycotts pose a threat to freedom in the U.S. and they are showing increasing fatigue with the push to cancel public figures.
