Netflix crime drama White Lines was filmed partly in Ibiza, but also on the neighboring island of Mallorca and on a classic western movie set.
Netflix crime drama White Lines is set on the party island of Ibiza in Spain, but it was actually filmed in several different locations - including another one of the Balearic Islands. Created by Álex Pina, White Lines follows Manchester librarian Zoe Walker (Laura Haddock), who becomes determined to find her brother's killer after his mummified body is discovered in a Spanish desert. Axel (Tom Rhys Harries) was a successful DJ and club owner in Ibiza until his mysterious disappearance twenty years ago, and Zoe suspects that one of his old friends might know what happened to him.
Some scenes in White Lines were filmed in Ibiza - specifically, scenes set in recognizable locations on the island. The most well-known to tourists and partygoers is Dalt Vila, the Old Town, a tiered city by the ocean that's rich with history. The scenes where Zoe arrives on the island and when Marcus (Daniel Mays) is confronted by a pair of Romanian drug dealers were both filmed in Marina Ibiza. Then there's the watch tower that Axel takes a teenage Kika (Zoe Mulheims) to see, which is called the Torre d'en Rovira and is located in Sant Josep de sa Talaia.
These landmarks are an effective way of giving White Lines an authentic Ibiza feel, but most of the inland scenes set in lavish villas and out in the countryside were actually filmed on the neighboring island of Mallorca - another popular tourist destination, but with less of a reputation for wild clubbing and parties than Ibiza has. Recognizable locations in Mallorca include the restaurant at the end of a long, narrow bridge that Marcus hobbles down to go and meet Oriol Calafat, which is Restaurante Illeta in Camp de Mar. Scenes at Marcus' villa were also filmed in Mallorca, and the villa is actually available to rent on AirBnB. The listing doesn't allow pets - perhaps to avoid any dogs ending up in the pool.
Leaving the Balearic Islands behind, the bizarre Old West themed bar that Zoe and Mike (Barry Ward) visit in the first episode of White Lines is in Texas Hollywood-Fort Bravo, a western movie set and theme park in the Tabernas desert. Many spaghetti westerns were shot in this part of Spain, which means that there are still several working movie sets that double as tourist attractions with actors and shows (like Westworld, but without the robots). Movies filmed in Texas Hollywood-Fort Bravo include The Sisters Brothers and Hannie Caulder, and it was also the main filming location for the Doctor Who episode "A Town Called Mercy."
Finally, some scenes in White Lines take place in Zoe and Axel's home city of Manchester. These scenes were filmed in Manchester itself and also in Bolton, a suburb north of the city. Manchester Evening News identified the main locations used - including the Mayfield Depot, a former railway depot which serves as the venue for Axel's illegal rave, but in real life has been converted into a venue for legal music gatherings. Meanwhile, the exterior location for Zoe's dad's house is a street in Bolton, as is the street corner where a young Axel is shown hanging out with his friends as a teen.
