A new series of web documentaries detail the process of creating the long-awaited Final Fantasy VII Remake, including how the developers came up with the game’s amazing visuals and designs. Square Enix has been working on the multi-installment re-imagining of 1997's hit Final Fantasy VII since 2015, with players just now experiencing the opening chapters of this adventure for themselves.
After much hype and speculation, Final Fantasy VII Remake was finally released earlier this month to both rave reviews and chart-topping sales, with many already proclaiming it to be one of the highest-performing console exclusives in the history of the PlayStation 4. This comes after a long and tenuous development cycle that saw the game switch developers from Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's CyberConnect2 to Square Enix's in-house team, in addition to multiple delays. However, the people in charge of bringing Final Fantasy VII Remake to life kept their noses to the grindstone through all of this, and have much to say about the hard work they have put into the game’s development – including how they crafted its mesmerizing art style.
The Inside FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE series of web-documentaries is currently available to watch on YouTube, with its fifth installment devoted to the work that talented minds like Producer Yoshinori Kitase, Director and Art Designer Tetsuya Nomura, and Environment Director Takako Miyake put into creating Final Fantasy VII Remake’s visuals. The team notes that they drew inspiration from the 2005 animated film Advent Children: Final Fantasy VII in designing the game’s characters, taking care to bring realism to the remake’s art style while still keeping true to the fantasy roots of the original game. In addition, they hoped to give the city of Midgar a lived-in, real-life feel that players could identify with. The Final Fantasy VII Remake development team’s labor has proven quite fruitful in the wake of the game’s release, as critics have praised Final Fantasy VII Remake’s expanded look into the original game’s lore and fast-paced combat that has been compared favorably to 2016’s Final Fantasy XV. Despite some initial misgivings, the game’s visuals have been lauded as well, especially in how they translate the original Final Fantasy VII’s blocky graphics into a fully-fleshed out world of modern architecture, futuristic technology, and ancient mysticism.
Indeed, the creative team behind Final Fantasy VII Remake has done an amazing job in bringing the world of Midgar to life for a new generation of fans, and the Inside FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE documentary provides a fascinating look into their hard work in crafting the game’s incredible art style and visual flair.
