Communications Minister Paul Fletcher has told Sky News the government intends to fight phone scammers by requiring companies to verify a customer's identity before they move carriers.
While Mr Fletcher said Telstra, Optus and Vodafone have already done so by introducing two factor authentication, some of Australia's smaller carriers have not taken such steps.
“That’s a vulnerability across the system,” Mr Fletcher said.
Mr Fletcher said the government intends to work with the telecommunications sector to identify technology-based protections.
“Significant amounts of money can be lost,” Mr Fletcher said. “It can be vulnerable people.”
